Who We Are
Partnering to build a world where all youth and women are safe
Ubuntu Rural Women” primarily refers to the Ubuntu Rural Women and Youth Movement (URWYM), a South African organization empowering women in farming/rural areas, fighting Gender-Based Violence (GBV) with holistic support (counseling, justice access), promoting economic independence (like beekeeping), and challenging climate issues, embodying the African philosophy of “I am because we are” to build community resilience and rights.
They work in places like Klapmuts, near Stellenbosch, supporting women facing poverty, financial dependence, and violence.
Our Approach
Key aspects of Ubuntu Rural Women's work
Combating GBV: Providing support, counseling, and access to justice for survivors in rural and farming communities.
Holistic Approach: Educating entire families (men, women, children) to unite against violence, according to Facebook.
Economic Empowerment: Initiatives like the Ubuntu Beekeeping Programme help women achieve financial independence, linking it to ecosystem restoration.
Climate Justice: Challenging climate policies and advocating for women’s roles in environmental solutions.
Leadership & Advocacy: Amplifying women’s voices and leading resistance against issues like evictions.
Community Focus: Centered in rural communities, farm workers’ settlements, and townships, operating with principles of solidarity and shared humanity (Ubuntu).
